Wo in aller Welt liegt denn Bad Berleburg, kann man da überhaupt leben, kann man dort überleben? Am Anfang war ich mir da auch nicht so ganz sicher, besonders als ich den ersten Winter hier verbrachte und mir klar wurde, was die Einheimischen unter der „kalten Heimat“ verstanden.
In the context of art it does not happen very often that, when reading about an unfinished work, one thinks or fantasizes to such an extent… Instantly one would like to know: What is it like to live in these two towns… ? What kind of resentments have been built up between the two ‘tribes’ over an almost unimaginable period of time? How much ignorance, which stereotypes and accusations have sunk into silence over the centuries? Which love stories secretly exist? Which questions are being asked on either side? Are questions being asked at all? What and who made them so mutually repellent or at least indifferent towards each other? Will it be possible to tell if politicians were the agents of the centuries-long silence? What should I imagine, what should I think?

Es kommt im Kunstkontext nicht allzu häufig vor, dass das Lesen über ein noch nicht zu Ende gebrachtes Kunstwerk einen so sehr mitdenken und mitphantasieren lässt ... Gleich möchte man wissen: Wie lebt es sich in den beiden Städten Bad Berleburg und Schmallenberg? Welcher Art sind die Ressentiments, die sich über einen schier unvorstellbaren Zeitraum zwischen den »Stämmen« aufgetürmt haben? Wieviel Ignoranz, welche Vorurteile und Vorwürfe mögen in das Schweigen über die Jahrhunderte eingesunken sein? Welche Liebesgeschichten, die im Verborgenen existierten? Welche Fragen stellt man sich hüben und drüben? Stellt man sich Fragen? Was und wer hat sie sich wechselseitig so abweisend, oder doch wenigstens so gleichgültig gemacht? Wird zu erkennen sein, sich herauskristallisieren lassen, ob es Politiker waren, die zu Akteuren des jahrhundertelangen Schweigens wurden? Was habe ich mir vorzustellen? Was kann ich mir denken?

The new positioning of the artist, his ‘abdication’ in favour of a co-authorship of many people, of ‘normal life’ – the de-individualisation of art at a moment in history when the individualisation of society is the main focus of the zeitgeist and the overall developments – was probably the actual trigger for the misunderstandings between artist and commissioner… For Gerz the avant-garde has not come to an end. As a ‘vanguard’ he is still ‘misunderstanding’ autonomous art and life. Authorship projects like ‘The Competition’ are important steps on the way to this kind of art that will no longer be recognisable as art for it will be fully absorbed by life.

Die neue Position des Künstlers und damit sein Zurücktreten zu Gunsten einer Mitautorenschaft vieler Menschen »des normalen Lebens«, also die Entsubjektivierung der Kunst in einem historischen Moment, in der die Subjektivierung der Gesellschaft im Mittelpunkt des Zeitgeistes und einer allgemeinen Entwicklung steht, wurde wohl zum eigentlichen Auslöser des Missverständnisses zwischen Künstler und Auftraggeber.… Für Gerz hat die Avantgarde nicht aufgehört. Als »Vorhut« ist er nach wie vor auf dem Weg, die autonome Kunst und das Leben »misszuverstehen«. Autorenprojekte wie »Der Wettbewerb« bilden überzeugende Schritte hin zu dieser Kunst, die nicht mehr als Kunst zu erkennen sein wird, da sie vom Leben ganz eingenommen ist.

Bad Berleburg and Schmallenberg, two small towns in a remote rural area of the Sauerland, are not only separated by the Rothaargebirge mountain chain, but divided as well by centuries-old religious, political and historical traditions and affiliations. At the beginning of the new millennium, the communities decided to bridge the divide with a mountain trail. Six public art works were to be installed along the sixteen-kilometre Forest Sculpture Trail. Jochen Gerz was commissioned to create works at each end of the trail. Forty thousand letters of invitation were sent by the two mayors to the residents of their towns explaining Der Wettbewerb (The Competition). Residents of each community were asked to send letters to the other city hall, describing what they loved most about their home towns and why they chose to live there. 138 letters, 69 from each town, were inscribed on metal plaques and installed outside the houses of participants from the other respective town.
